Narcotics Worth Over Rs 4 Cr Seized by Cachar Police

SILCHAR: Assam police on Sunday conducted an operation in the Chachar District of the state that led to the capture of a huge quantity of narcotic tablets and the apprehension of two suspected peddlers.

A police team carried out the operation in the early morning hours of Sunday in the Berenga region of Silchar city. The team led to the seizure of about 40000 Yaba tablets. The market value of the narcotics is said to be Rs 4 Cr. The police team was also able to make two arrests in relation to the case and they were identified as Saharul Islam Mazumder (31 years) and Samir Hussain Laskar alias Babul (45 years).

Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta mentioned that the arrested individuals were looking to sell narcotics to buyers in the Northeastern States. The official also informed that the kingpin of the narcotics business was arrested and they were now working towards capturing everyone related to the operations.

In a bizarre development, two inmates serving life imprisonment managed to break out of the Silchar Central Jail in the wee hours of Thursday. The duo managed to escape by digging a tunnel through the toilet inside their cell. Assam Police is still on the lookout for the criminals who were convicted for different murder incidents. The identities of the criminals were revealed to be Hifzur Rahman and Deep Nunia, both belonging to the Barak Valley region of the state.

Hafizur Rahman was one of the 6 accused of the murder of Ahrar Ahmed alias Naz in 2011. The incident triggered huge protests on the streets of Bhanga and Badarpur leading to the imposition of Section 144 of CrPC. The court had held Selim Ahmed, Hifzur Rahman, Rajani Talukdar, Sultan Ahmed, Hussain Ahmed and Raju Ahmed guilty for this murder and their involvement in several crimes including kidnapping, car theft and dacoity in the valley and sentenced them to life imprisonment in 2013.
